Forensic evidence in the Charlie Kirk assassination case exposes new details about the bullet that killed the conservative activist.Washington TodayNew court filings have revealed key forensic evidence that prosecutors say links the rifle allegedly used by Tyler Robinson to the bullet that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The defense had previously claimed the ATF was unable to conclusively connect the bullet fragments to Robinson's gun, but the new report alleges one of the fragments matched the caliber of the Mauser 98 rifle recovered near the scene.
Why it matters
This development is seen as a major setback for Robinson's defense, which had argued the bullet evidence was inconclusive. The new findings could make it more difficult for Robinson's lawyers to argue he did not fire the fatal shot that killed Kirk during a crowded event at Utah Valley University last September.
The details
According to the new court filing, the ATF lab described one of the bullet jacket fragments recovered from Kirk's autopsy as a '.30 calibre class deformed/damaged bullet jacket fragment.' This matches the caliber of the Mauser 98 30-06 rifle that was recovered close to the scene, which prosecutors believe was used to kill Kirk. The gun had been a gift to Robinson from his grandfather and was deemed to be operable. Additionally, the cartridge casing recovered was embellished with a 'Remington headstamp' designating its proper caliber for the weapon, and was identified by the ATF as having been fired from the rifle linked to Robinson.
- On September 10, 2026, Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University.
- The following day, September 11, authorities discovered a bolt-action rifle wrapped in a towel and some engraved bullet casings near the scene.
- On September 12, 2026, police announced the arrest of 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who had confessed to his father.
- On September 16, 2026, prosecutors revealed charges against Robinson including aggravated murder and said they would seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
- On December 11, 2026, Robinson made his first in-court appearance, with the judge delaying a ruling on public access to the case.
The players
Tyler Robinson
The 22-year-old man charged with capital murder in the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors say his DNA was matched to the trigger of the rifle used in the shooting, as well as other evidence found at the scene.
Charlie Kirk
The 31-year-old conservative activist and podcaster who was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University in September 2026.
Erika Kirk
The widow of Charlie Kirk, who said she has forgiven her husband's alleged killer and that 'the answer to hate is not hate.'
Jeff Gray
The Utah County Attorney who announced prosecutors would seek the death penalty against Tyler Robinson if he is convicted.
Tony Graf Jr.
The judge presiding over the Tyler Robinson case who unsealed new details about the forensic evidence this week.
What they’re saying
“I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out.”
— Tyler Robinson
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us.”
— Donald Trump
“You have no idea the fire you've ignited within this wife. The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry.”
— Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow
“That young man, that young man, I forgive him. I forgive him because it was what Christ did, and it is what Charlie would do. The answer to hate is not hate. The answer we know from the gospel is love and always love, love for our enemies and love for those who persecute us.”
— Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on whether to allow cameras in the courtroom and how much of the proceedings should be made public.
The takeaway
This new forensic evidence is a significant blow to the defense's case, making it harder for them to argue that Tyler Robinson did not fire the fatal shot that killed conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The case has drawn national attention and sparked debates around political violence, with Kirk's widow calling for 'love' over 'hate' in her response.
