H & N Group Inc. has recalled nearly 4,000 units of its Frozen Cooked Medium Peeled & Deveined Shrimp due to possible contamination with the radioactive isotope Cesium-137 during manufacturing. The affected shrimp was distributed to around 30 locations along the Gulf Coast and in the greater Houston area.

Why it matters

Cesium-137 exposure through ingestion can increase the risk of cancer, making this recall a serious public health concern. This comes after a much larger radioactive shrimp contamination recall last year, raising questions about the safety and oversight of the shrimp supply chain.

The details

The recalled shrimp was manufactured under 'insanitary conditions' where it may have been contaminated with Cesium-137. The affected shrimp was sold in one-pound retail plastic bags with lot numbers EA14 25118 (best by 10/28/2026) and EA14 25119 (best by 10/29/2026), and the UPC code 04120333035.

  • The recall was initiated on February 9, 2026.
  • The recall received its Class II designation on February 18, 2026.

What’s next

The FDA will likely investigate the manufacturing facility to determine the source of the radioactive contamination and ensure all affected products have been removed from the market.

The takeaway

This recall highlights the need for stricter oversight and safety protocols in the seafood supply chain to protect public health and prevent future incidents of radioactive contamination.
