Thayer was born on August 9, 1942 to Walton and Anna Wilson in Floydada. She attended school in Floydada and graduated from Floydada High School in 1960. In 1961, she married Harvey Allen, with whom she had two sons, Mike and Norman. In 1991, she married Fred Thayer, and they enjoyed 35 years together. Thayer was an active member of the Floydada Methodist Church, where she taught the women's Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of Eastern Star and served as the secretary of the organization for a number of years. Thayer worked as a secretary in several law offices and finished her career as the manager of the Floydada office of Floyd County Abstract.
