The Flower Mound Police Department has welcomed a new K9 officer, Maverick, a 1-year-old German Shorthair Pointer. Maverick is trained to detect narcotics including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy, and fentanyl. He will work alongside Officer Michael Moore, whose wife suggested the name Maverick due to his resemblance to the character from Top Gun. Maverick is the sixth K9 unit to serve with the Flower Mound PD.

Why it matters

The addition of K9 Officer Maverick fills a void left by the recent retirement of K9 Officer Ares, and continues the Flower Mound PD's long history of utilizing specialized K9 units to assist in law enforcement operations. K9 officers provide valuable support in detecting illegal substances and enhancing public safety.

The details

Maverick came to the United States from the Netherlands and has been living with Officer Moore for the past five weeks. When Maverick detects something, he will alert Officer Moore, who will reward him with his favorite toy. Maverick's badge number is fittingly 420. Residents will have the chance to meet Maverick and Officer Moore at the Flower Mound PD's open house on Saturday.

  • Maverick joined the Flower Mound PD in April 2026.
  • K9 Officer Ares' tour officially ended on March 21, 2026.
