Collier's retirement closes the book on an era of girls' basketball excellence in Tennessee, as a new generation of coaches prepares to carry on her legacy.Lenoir City TodayShelley Collier, a Hall of Fame basketball coach and former Lady Vols player, is retiring after 39 years of coaching girls' basketball. Collier, who was the head coach at Lenoir City High School, will now serve as the Lenoir City School District's Athletic Director. She is passing the coaching torch to veteran coach Andy Pennington, who will take over the Lenoir City girls' basketball program.
Why it matters
Collier's retirement marks the end of an era for girls' basketball in Tennessee. As a former Lady Vol player under the legendary Pat Summitt, Collier brought that same intensity and winning pedigree to her high school coaching career, leading Webb School of Knoxville to 10 state championship games and 6 state titles over 25 years. Her departure leaves big shoes to fill, but she is confident the program is in good hands with Pennington.
The details
Collier, who was born in Anderson County and played point guard for the Lady Vols from 1983-87, began her coaching career as a graduate assistant under Summitt. She then spent time as the head coach at Clinton and Karns High Schools before taking over the Webb School program in 1998, where she built a dynasty. Collier led the Lady Spartans to 10 state championship games and 6 state titles, coaching stars like Glory Johnson and Marjorie Butler. She took the Lenoir City job in 2023 after resigning from Webb, and now leaves the program in good shape for her successor, Andy Pennington.

What they’re saying
“Mainly, I've been doing this a long time. The game is changing. My family, I really don't want to miss out on my grandchildren. I've got a 7-month-old grandson and more on the way in the near future, and I want to be there for that. And when you coach, you can't leave. You've got to be there.”
— Shelley Collier, Retiring Head Coach
“He's going to be outstanding. I'm glad we got somebody in place. That was important to me, to be able to do that for Lenoir City girls' basketball because I want it to be good.”
— Shelley Collier, Retiring Head Coach
“Of course, Pat is intense, but I'd look at her, and she's just passionate about what she does, and she had high expectations and wants her culture to be right and has high standards, and I just wanted to continue carrying on her legacy and trying to do what she did as a high school coach. Hopefully her influence on me has gone on through other people. I know it has from my daughters' standpoint. I know it has.”
