After the passing of Miller Bruce Sullivan in 2025 due to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), the UKirk collegiate ministry received many donations in his memory. The ministry used these funds to completely renovate the backyard space, creating the 'Sullivan Space' as a lasting tribute to Miller's life and impact on the community.

Why it matters

Miller Sullivan was deeply involved with UKirk during his time at the University of Tennessee, and the new Sullivan Space provides a place for the community to gather, remember him, and continue his legacy of curiosity, justice, belonging, and hope.

The details

The renovation was a collaborative effort, with contributions from Miller's family, friends, and local businesses. James Gilbert, an Eagle Scout, led the construction of benches and a fire pit. Landscape designer Rudi Wimberley carefully planned the space, including plants and trees tied to scripture. A plaque and a painted quote from Miller's own UKirk sermon were added to the area.

  • Miller Sullivan passed away on January 15, 2025.
  • In spring 2026, UKirk minister Rev. Rachel Penmore met with Miller's parents to discuss plans for the backyard renovation.
  • The new Sullivan Space was dedicated on April 11, 2026.
