Why it matters
Sumter High's win over the No. 10 ranked West Florence team in SCHSL 5A-DII was an important early-season region victory for the Gamecocks, who have since hit a bit of a skid outside of region play. Davis' dominant performance on the mound gave his team confidence and set the tone for their strong start to region competition.
The details
Davis was unstoppable on the mound, retiring the side in order in the first two innings. While West Florence got a leadoff single in the third, Davis quickly got three outs to keep the shutout going. Sumter High's bats then got involved, with Bowdie Bowden driving in a run in the fourth and Joseph Chapman lacing a two-run single in the fifth to give the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead. With the comfortable cushion, Davis was able to cruise, allowing an unearned run in the seventh before Sumter tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.
- On March 24, Davis pitched the complete game against West Florence.
- Sumter High would go on to complete the series sweep two days later, opening region play with wins in each of their first six contests.

What they’re saying
“Not just as coaches, but as a team in general, when we've got Marion on the mound, you have a different level of confidence; they have a different amount of swagger about themselves.”
— Will McMillan, Sumter High head coach
“We knew they were going to be all right just because of their record and where they were ranked, but we definitely weren't scared of them or anything.”
— Marion Davis, Sumter High pitcher
“I always feel like the first three innings go by real quick; I don't even remember or notice the first three innings. I think I really settled in when Joseph got that big hit and we got up by three runs. That definitely helps me as a pitcher to be more relaxed as a pitcher.”
