As spring heat waves become more common, Philadelphia's public schools race to activate air conditioning early, providing relief for students and staff in aging buildings.Philadelphia TodayWith temperatures in Philadelphia approaching 90 degrees this week, the city's school district has made an early switch to air conditioning, transitioning half of its buildings with central HVAC systems to cooling mode. The district typically waits until May 1 to make the seasonal switch, but crews have been working to complete the process early due to the unseasonably hot weather.
Why it matters
Philadelphia schools often struggle with inadequate cooling systems, with 53 of the district's 218 schools currently lacking sufficient air conditioning. The early activation of cooling systems is an effort to provide relief and a comfortable learning environment for students and staff as the region experiences an early heat wave.
The details
District spokesperson Monique Braxton explained that many of the school buildings operate on a two-pipe HVAC system, which cannot provide heat and cooling simultaneously. Crews have been moving building-to-building to complete the seasonal switch, with half of the centrally cooled buildings already transitioned. The remaining buildings will be switched over by the typical May 1 date. Schools with window units have also been instructed to turn on their air conditioning.

What they’re saying
“Many of our buildings operate on a two-pipe HVAC system, and they cannot provide heat and AC simultaneously. So crews have begun to move building to building to complete the seasonal switch.”
— Monique Braxton, District Spokesperson
The takeaway
The early activation of air conditioning in Philadelphia schools highlights the ongoing challenge of providing adequate cooling systems in aging school infrastructure, especially as the region experiences more frequent and intense heat waves due to climate change.
