A Norristown police officer has resigned after being criminally charged for running over a naked man during an incident last week. Sgt. Daniel DeOrzio has been charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, official oppression, and recklessly endangering another person for the incident, which occurred on February 4th.
Why it matters
The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by police and the need for de-escalation tactics, especially when dealing with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. It also highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in law enforcement.
The details
According to authorities, the naked man, later identified as Justin Rich, was "screaming and damaging cars" when police arrived. DeOrzio, who was the highest ranking officer on the scene, ordered a gray pickup truck to be moved out of his way in the intersection. Immediately after the vehicle moved, DeOrzio accelerated his vehicle and slammed it into Rich, sending him flying into the air and into the middle of the road. Investigators said that DeOrzio did not utilize any de-escalation tactics, did not give any verbal orders or commands, did not attempt to restrain Rich, and did not attempt to use a less lethal weapon, all of which were options.
