A proposed bylaw change could open up new opportunities for high school athletes in Ohio to participate in sports at neighboring schools.Mansfield TodayIn May, Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) member schools will vote on 12 referendum issues, including a proposal that would allow students at public schools without a specific sport team to participate in that sport at another OHSAA public school. The most notable issue is 'Issue 2B - Bylaw 4-3-1', which if passed, would create two conditions for this public-to-public sports participation.
Why it matters
This referendum has become a hot topic in Richland County after the 2026 spring season, when Mansfield Senior could not field a full varsity softball team. Under current rules, public school students whose school does not offer a varsity sport are not allowed to play that sport at a different school, unlike private school students who can do so. The proposed change aims to provide more opportunities for students to participate in high school sports.
The details
The two conditions for the proposed bylaw change are: 1) In multi-high school districts, students whose school does not offer a specific sport may be assigned to participate at another school within the same district. 2) Students at a private school wishing to participate in a sport not offered by their private school are already allowed to play at the public school in which they reside. A simple majority vote is needed for the issue to pass, and the OHSAA will hold meetings in April to explain the referendum to school administrators before the May 1-15 voting period.
- The OHSAA annual referendum voting period is from May 1-15, 2026.
- Voting results will be announced on May 18, 2026.
