The Geauga Park District is offering a free 'Family Campfire Safety' program on May 3 at Claridon Woodlands. The 90-minute session will teach families with children under 10 how to safely build, tend, and extinguish campfires, as this age group faces the greatest risk of campfire-related burns. Participants will learn fire-building techniques and safety tips, then get to practice their new skills by roasting marshmallows.

Why it matters

Campfires are a popular outdoor activity, but children under 10 are statistically the most likely to be burned around a campfire. This program aims to make sure families can enjoy campfires safely and responsibly.

The details

During the 'Family Campfire Safety' program, Naturalist Trevor Wearstler will demonstrate proper fire-building and safety techniques. Families will then have the opportunity to practice what they've learned in a controlled setting, with guidance from park staff. The hands-on session will cover several fire-building methods as well as practical safety tips for both kids and adults.

  • The program will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on May 3, 2026.
  • Registration is required and can be completed online or by phone through the Geauga Park District.
