Both the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Shoreham-Wading River High School have made the playoffs after successful regular seasons, and now they're setting their sights on Suffolk County championships. The boys' team finished 17-3 and earned the No. 2 seed in the Class A bracket, while the girls' squad went 17-2 and nabbed the No. 3 seed in their Class A bracket.

Why it matters

What they’re saying

“We had a tremendous season. All the work we put in the last few years is finally coming to fruition. We played some big games this year and won them when in the years past we would've struggled. I'm excited and confident heading into the playoffs.”

— Kevin Culhane, Head coach, SWR boys' basketball (timesreview.com)

“We need to play our game and bring the energy. Move the ball on offense and pressure on defense. Bayport is very athletic and well coached, so you know every time you play them, they are going to bring their best effort.”

— Christian Coster, Head coach, SWR girls' basketball (timesreview.com)

What’s next

The boys' team will face a tough test against No. 1 seed William Floyd in a scrimmage, which should help prepare them for the playoffs. The girls' team will also have scrimmages during their nine-day layoff to keep the players in game shape.

The takeaway

These SWR basketball programs have built up to this point, with the boys' team overcoming past struggles to become a contender and the girls' squad looking to capture the school's first Suffolk title in three years. Both teams have the talent and momentum to make deep playoff runs and potentially bring home county championships.
