Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, the beloved co-hosts of the fourth hour of the Today show, were once banned from the show's iconic plaza for being too loud and having too much fun while preparing for their segment. Gifford recalled the incident, saying they were 'forced off the plaza for making too much noise.' Kotb, who was more by-the-book as a reporter, loosened up with Gifford's influence, and the duo became known for their day-drinking, dancing, and willingness to try anything on camera. After 11 years on the show, Gifford said goodbye in 2019, admitting that leaving Kotb was the hardest part.
Why it matters
Gifford and Kotb's chemistry and on-air antics made their Today show segment very popular with viewers, but their excessive fun occasionally got them into trouble with the show's producers. This incident highlights the delicate balance morning show hosts must strike between professionalism and engaging, relatable on-air personalities.
The details
Apparently, the wine-loving duo was having a little too much fun preparing for their show. 'So I was listening to the producers. I was following the cards. I was doing all the things I was supposed to do,' Kotb recalled. But once Gifford joined her as co-host, Kotb loosened up and the two started having more fun on the job, which Gifford believes is where the magic happened. 'That's where the gold is. That's when you start mining the gold,' Gifford said.
- Gifford and Kotb debuted the fourth hour of Today in April 2008.
