When NBCUniversal spun off cable networks like E! into Versant, it opened up new streaming opportunities for the company's shows. However, despite claims from former 'Real Housewives of New York' star Sonja Morgan that the new E! series 'The Golden Life' would stream on Hulu, Deadline has learned this is not the case. Versant has the flexibility to sell streaming rights to third-party platforms, but no deal is in place for 'The Golden Life' to stream on Hulu at this time.
Why it matters
This highlights the shifting landscape of how reality TV shows are distributed, as networks look to maximize revenue streams beyond just linear TV. While Versant has more flexibility to partner with streamers, the company is still determining the best path forward for 'The Golden Life' and its other new programming.
The details
Sonja Morgan had posted on Instagram that 'The Golden Life', which also stars Luann de Lesseps, Ramona Singer and Kelly Bensimon, would stream on Hulu alongside its linear debut on E!. However, Deadline has learned this is not the case, as Versant has not finalized any streaming deals for the show yet. Versant's President of Entertainment Val Boreland said the company is 'talking to all the streamers' and has 'a lot more flexibility to consider things' compared to when they were part of NBCUniversal.
- The series will start filming this spring.
The players
Sonja Morgan
A former star of 'The Real Housewives of New York' who claimed 'The Golden Life' would stream on Hulu.
Val Boreland
The President of Entertainment at Versant, the company that owns E! and is producing 'The Golden Life'.
Jill Zarin
Originally set to star in 'The Golden Life' but was fired after making racist remarks about Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Dorinda Medley
A former 'Real Housewives of New York' star who will join 'The Golden Life' as a guest star.
What they’re saying
“We can partner with people in ways that we weren't able to [before]… maybe that in the past we wouldn't have been able to do because they were in conflict with our parent company.”
— Val Boreland, President of Entertainment, Versant (Deadline)
“Everything is on the table to discuss, and again, we have a lot more flexibility to consider things. We are talking to all the streamers, everyone we know, people we work with, friendly competition now can be partners, and I think that's really going to open the floodgates.”
— Val Boreland, President of Entertainment, Versant (Deadline)
What’s next
Versant is still in discussions with various streaming platforms about potential distribution deals for 'The Golden Life', but no agreements have been finalized as of now.
The takeaway
The shifting media landscape is giving production companies like Versant more flexibility to partner with streamers, but they are still navigating the best path forward for new shows like 'The Golden Life' as they balance linear and digital distribution.
