The Las Vegas Raiders are promoting defensive line coach and run game coordinator Rob Leonard to defensive coordinator, according to multiple reports. Leonard, who has spent the last three seasons with the Raiders, will take over a defense that struggled in 2025, ranking 25th in points per game allowed and 24th in sacks.
Why it matters
The Raiders are looking to turn around a defense that underperformed last season under former coordinator Patrick Graham. Leonard's promotion provides continuity and familiarity, as he has worked closely with star pass rusher Maxx Crosby. The move also gives Leonard his first opportunity as an NFL defensive coordinator.
The details
Leonard, 38, has been with the Raiders since 2023, first as the defensive line coach and then adding run game coordinator duties. Prior to that, he had coaching stints with the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, and Baltimore Ravens. He now takes over a Raiders defense that will have the opportunity to improve through free agency and the upcoming draft, where Las Vegas holds the No. 1 overall pick.
