On Saturday, April 18th, the Gila Resources Information Project (GRIP) is hosting a community litter cleanup event in Silver City, New Mexico to celebrate Gila Earth Day. Volunteers will meet at the Gila Community Foundation parking lot from 9am to 12pm to pick up trash, debris, and recyclables from neighborhoods, parks, roadways, and streams. The cleanup is part of a broader effort by GRIP and its Pick It Up - Toss No Más program to raise awareness about environmental issues and encourage local residents to take action to protect the planet.

Why it matters

Litter and debris pose serious threats to the environment, harming wildlife, contaminating soil and water, and aiding the spread of pests and diseases. As the only source of manufactured, non-biodegradable waste, humans have a responsibility to clean up our communities and preserve the natural beauty of the Gila region. This Earth Day cleanup event is an opportunity for Silver City residents to come together and make a tangible difference in stewarding their local environment.

The details

Volunteers will be provided with trash bags, gloves, trash pickers, and snacks at the Gila Community Foundation parking lot. They will then fan out across Silver City to collect litter from neighborhoods, parks, roadways, and streams, returning to the parking lot between 11am and 12pm to drop off the collected materials. The New Mexico Department of Transportation will haul away the trash to the landfill. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes, sun hats, and sunscreen, and children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
