A 100-pound delivery robot named Coco has debuted in Jersey City's Heights neighborhood as part of a pilot program. Coco, an autonomous vehicle designed by California-based Coco Robotics, partners with local businesses to deliver pizza, food, and groceries via Uber Eats at a lower cost than human delivery. Officials say the pilot could reduce traffic, cut emissions, and potentially expand across North and South Jersey.

Why it matters

The introduction of Coco in Jersey City represents an innovative approach to sustainable and efficient urban delivery. By utilizing autonomous robots, the city aims to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and provide a more affordable delivery option for local businesses and residents.

The details

Coco is equipped with sensors and AI navigation to safely navigate sidewalks at speeds up to 5 mph, avoiding obstacles and people. The robot can carry up to four grocery bags or 10 extra-large pizza boxes. Coco has already partnered with around 50 restaurants, grocery stores, and other businesses in the Heights neighborhood to facilitate deliveries. Customers can order through Uber Eats and choose the robot delivery option, which is more affordable than human delivery.

What they’re saying

“These deliveries are only going a few miles across the city, so it doesn't make sense to be doing these with cars. We built a much better way to do it.”

— Zach Rash, CEO and Founder, Coco Robotics

“We can be really helpful to the local businesses, reducing the cost of delivery, and especially in places that have the kind of density like Jersey City, we can help decongest the roads and move more deliveries to more sustainable and safer transport methods like the Coco robot.”

— Zach Rash, CEO and Founder, Coco Robotics

What’s next

Coco plans to expand its delivery service to additional neighborhoods in Jersey City in the near future, and the company is also exploring opportunities to bring the robots to other parts of North and South Jersey.

The takeaway

The introduction of Coco, a zero-emission delivery robot, in Jersey City's Heights neighborhood showcases the city's commitment to sustainable transportation and innovative solutions to address urban challenges such as traffic congestion and environmental impact.
