The Tampa Bay Lightning's veteran core of stars like Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, and Andrei Vasilevskiy aim to lead the team back to Stanley Cup glory after three straight early playoff exits.Omaha TodayThe Tampa Bay Lightning enter the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs as one of the favorites to win the Eastern Conference after a 50-26-6 regular season. Led by stars like Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, and Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Lightning are seeking their third championship in seven seasons after winning back-to-back titles in 2020 and 2021. However, they've fallen short in the playoffs the past three years, losing in the first or second round each time.
Why it matters
The Lightning have been one of the NHL's elite teams for nearly a decade, making the playoffs every season since 2014-15. After their recent playoff disappointments, they'll be looking to recapture the magic of their 2020 and 2021 championship runs and cement their status as a modern NHL dynasty.
The details
Tampa Bay's roster is loaded with veteran talent, including eight players who were part of their recent Cup-winning teams. Kucherov, Point, and Vasilevskiy lead the way, with Kucherov coming off another 100-point season. The team also added key pieces like Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jake Guentzel in recent trades and free agent signings. However, injuries to Point and captain Victor Hedman during the regular season are a concern heading into the playoffs.
- The Lightning finished the 2025-26 regular season with a 50-26-6 record, good for second place in the Atlantic Division.
- Tampa Bay last won the Stanley Cup in 2021, their second title in a row.
The players
Nikita Kucherov
Arguably the greatest offensive player in Lightning history, the 32-year-old first-line winger put together his fourth straight season with at least 110 points and his sixth with at least 100 in the past eight. He's a two-time Stanley Cup champion, three-time Art Ross Trophy winner, and the 2019 Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP.
Brayden Point
The 30-year-old center is the heart and soul of the Lightning, a two-time Cup winner who was selected to play for Team Canada at the Olympics but missed the games due to injury.
Andrei Vasilevskiy
Considered one of the best goalies in the NHL, the 31-year-old Russian has won two Stanley Cups, the 2021 Conn Smythe Trophy, and the 2019 Vezina Trophy. He was 39-15-4 with a 2.31 GAA and .912 save percentage in 58 games this season.
Victor Hedman
The hulking 35-year-old defenseman is the captain and face of the Lightning. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2020 and the Norris Trophy in 2018 as the NHL's best defenseman, but was limited to just 33 games this season due to injury.
Jake Guentzel
The 31-year-old forward signed a seven-year, $63 million contract with Tampa Bay in 2024 after being traded from the Carolina Hurricanes. He finished second on the Lightning in goals, assists, and points this season.
What they’re saying
“We've got a veteran group that knows what it takes to win the Cup. If we can stay healthy, I like our chances of getting back to the Finals and finishing the job.”
— Brayden Point, Center
“Andrei is the backbone of this team. When he's on his game, we're tough to beat no matter who we're playing.”
— Victor Hedman, Defenseman and Team Captain
What’s next
The Lightning will open the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs on April 18 against the winner of the first-round series between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs.
The takeaway
After three straight early playoff exits, the veteran-laden Lightning are primed for another deep postseason run. If Kucherov, Point, and Vasilevskiy can stay healthy, Tampa Bay has the talent and experience to capture its third championship in seven seasons and cement its status as an NHL powerhouse.
