The Hunt High girls lacrosse team fell 16-5 at home to Cleveland, dropping to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the Greater Neuse River Conference. Katie Nguyen scored twice for the Warriors, who have nine new players on the roster this season as they continue to build the program.

Why it matters

Hunt is the lone county girls lacrosse team and has been fighting an uphill battle since joining the Triangle-area conference four years ago, contending with more experienced and deeper rosters from other schools.

The details

The Warriors came up short for the eighth time in nine matches, as the Rams improved to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference, remaining a half-game behind league-leading Fuquay-Varina. In addition to Nguyen's two goals, Greta Speight, Kaylee Wilkins and Emma Reel each scored once for Hunt. Wilkins also had seven ground balls and won seven draws.

  • The match was played on Monday, April 14, 2026.
  • The Warriors will host Cleveland again in the regular-season finale on April 29, 2026.

What they’re saying

“We are excited to be in a new conference this year. We have nine new players this year, including our goalie, and excited to be growing the program. We have struggled this year to get the wins we would like, however, it has been a learning year for many of our young players and looking forward to what is to come in the last half of the season.”

— Wendy Wilkins, Head Coach

What’s next

The Warriors will host Fuquay-Varina, the league-leading team, on Wednesday at Garner High.

The takeaway

Despite the challenges of being the lone county girls lacrosse team and facing more experienced opponents, Hunt is focused on growing its program and developing its young players, with an eye toward future success in the new conference.
