Dare County has released a new video highlighting an upcoming beach nourishment project scheduled for the summer of 2026 in the villages of Buxton and Avon on Hatteras Island. The project aims to widen existing beaches and create a larger protective barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and critical infrastructure, including N.C. Highway 12, to reduce vulnerability to storm surge and ocean overwash.
Why it matters
Hatteras Island's beaches have faced increasing erosion in recent years, putting vital roadways and infrastructure at risk. This beach nourishment project is part of Dare County's ongoing efforts to protect the shoreline and enhance the recreational beach for residents and visitors.
The details
The project will place sand along approximately 2.9 miles of shoreline in Buxton and 2.5 miles in Avon. It will also include repairs to the Buxton terminal groin to help stabilize the shoreline and strengthen long-term erosion control efforts.
