The Bruins' narrow Game 1 victory over the Shamrocks sets the stage for an intense, back-and-forth playoff series between the two Central Division rivals.Austin TodayThe Austin Bruins started the NAHL Central Division semifinals with a 3-2 win over the Watertown Shamrocks on Friday, but the team is still looking to play much better. The Bruins had to kill two third period power plays and allowed the Shamrocks to cut the lead to one goal late, but they were able to hang on for the victory. Austin head coach Steve Howard said it was a 'C effort' from his squad and he's hoping for better from his veteran team when they host Game 2 on Saturday.
Why it matters
The Bruins are the top seed in the division and are expected to make a deep playoff run, so any early struggles or miscues could be concerning. However, the team has a veteran roster and is confident they can clean up their play and take control of the series.
The details
Austin took the lead for good in the second period when John Flood scored his second goal of the season on a dive towards the net to make it 2-1. Bruins defenseman Nathan Williams said the team knows that one win doesn't mean the series is sealed up yet, and they'll need to be ready for a big effort from the Shamrocks in Game 2.
- The Bruins (44-16 overall) hosted Game 1 of the best-of-five series on Friday, April 18, 2026.
- Game 2 will be played on Saturday, April 19, 2026 at 7:05 p.m.

What they’re saying
“As a team, we didn't play our best, that's for sure. We were spotty. We've got to limit our mistakes and we made a lot of them. Not to take anything away from Watertown, because they're playing well and forcing turnovers. We just made some mistakes down the stretch, and we've got to be better.”
— Steve Howard, Head Coach, Austin Bruins
“I was just trying to get to the net, I know that's where a lot of goals are scored on the rebound. I don't even know how it went in, but I got it in there.”
— John Flood, Forward, Austin Bruins
“Patience is a really big part of it. With the group that we have, we all root for each other and we all want what's best for the team.”
— John Flood, Forward, Austin Bruins
“We played a decent game tonight and tomorrow we've got to come back even stronger. We flush today, and tomorrow we start all over again and that's a new team over there and we have to go out and try to win a playoff game.”
— Nathan Williams, Defenseman, Austin Bruins
What’s next
The Bruins and Shamrocks will face off in Game 2 of their best-of-five series on Saturday, April 19, 2026 at 7:05 p.m. in Austin.
The takeaway
Despite the Bruins' Game 1 victory, the team knows they need to play much cleaner and more disciplined hockey to advance in the playoffs. The veteran Bruins squad is confident they can clean up their mistakes, but the Shamrocks have shown they can push the top-seeded team and the series is far from over.
