A community-driven youth program introduces the next generation to the joys of fishing and environmental stewardship in Northern Michigan.Roscommon TodayThe Mason-Griffith Founders Chapter of Trout Unlimited recently wrapped up its winter youth programming in Grayling, Michigan, which included a series of fly-tying workshops and an ice fishing outing. The nonprofit organization provided equipment, materials, and transportation to engage over 30 middle school students in hands-on outdoor activities, building enthusiasm for the upcoming Youth Fishing Club season.
Why it matters
The Trout Unlimited youth program aims to introduce the next generation to the joys of fishing and environmental stewardship, while also providing accessible outdoor experiences for local students. By investing in these community-driven initiatives, the organization is helping to foster a lifelong appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
The details
The winter program featured five fly-tying sessions hosted at Old Au Sable Fly Shop, where up to 14 students per session learned to tie various patterns like wooly buggers, foam terrestrials, and egg flies. The chapter provided all necessary tools and materials, including 10 fly-tying vises for Grayling Middle School students to use. Volunteers from the chapter, including Board President Karen Harrison, assisted with instruction and ensuring each participant had a hands-on experience.
- The fly-tying sessions were held semi-weekly beginning in January 2026.
- The ice fishing outing took place on a mild Saturday in February 2026.
