Kayl Petersen, a 6'0" forward who spent the last two seasons at Virginia Tech, has committed to play for the Marquette Golden Eagles women's basketball team. Petersen, a Wisconsin native, originally committed to Marquette in 2022 before following former Golden Eagles head coach Megan Duffy to Virginia Tech. After seeing her playing time decline during her sophomore season with the Hokies, Petersen has now decided to return to Marquette.

Why it matters

Petersen's commitment provides a boost to the Golden Eagles' roster as they look to rebuild under new head coach Cara Consuegra. Her experience and familiarity with the program could help ease the transition, though she'll need to improve on her shooting and ball-handling to earn a significant role.

The details

Petersen averaged 4.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 15.8 minutes per game as a freshman at Virginia Tech. Her playing time and production declined in her sophomore season, as she averaged just 10.6 minutes, 2.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest. Despite the drop-off, Petersen was still a contributor for the Hokies, who made the NCAA Tournament this past season as a #9 seed.

  • Petersen originally committed to Marquette in October 2022.
  • She spent the last two seasons playing for Virginia Tech.
