Southwire, a leading wire and cable manufacturer, has achieved its first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for its Bremen Industrial Plant in Massachusetts. The facility was awarded LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council for implementing sustainable strategies in areas like site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.

Why it matters

LEED certification is a globally recognized standard for green building leadership, signaling that a facility has undergone rigorous third-party verification to meet the highest sustainability standards. This achievement aligns with Southwire's commitment to generational sustainability and demonstrates the company's efforts to build new manufacturing sites to the highest quality and environmental standards.

The details

During the Bremen plant's design and construction, the Southwire team worked closely with contractors to implement various sustainability improvements, such as individualized HVAC and lighting for offices, using light-colored roofing to reduce the urban heat island effect, capturing rainwater, and reducing light pollution in the parking lots.
