As e-mobility devices become more common, Wilmette residents support new regulations to manage their use and impact on the community.Wilmette TodayA survey conducted by the village of Wilmette, Illinois found that a majority of residents support implementing regulations for e-bikes and e-scooters. The proposed ordinance would set speed limits and restrict where the motorized mobility devices can be operated.
Why it matters
As electric bikes and scooters become more popular, many communities are grappling with how to balance the needs of riders with pedestrian safety and quality of life concerns. Wilmette's survey results reflect a common desire to manage the growth of e-mobility while still allowing residents to use the devices.
The details
The survey, which ran from February to March, received 592 responses with 97% of respondents identifying as Wilmette residents. While 80% of respondents said they don't use electric mobility devices, most of the 20% who do were between 31-55 and 56+ years old and used them primarily for leisure. Most people think e-bikes and e-scooters capable of speeds over 10 mph should be limited to riders 16 and older, and that the devices should be prohibited on sidewalks. Over half believe they should be allowed on trails and paths at low speeds.
- The village survey was open from February 10 to March 20, 2026.
- The Village Board discussed the proposed e-mobility ordinance at their January 27, 2026 meeting.
