A major highway construction project disrupts traffic flow but promises long-term improvements to regional mobility.Williamson TodayThe Illinois Department of Transportation has announced an overnight closure of Interstate 57 in Williamson and Franklin counties as part of an ongoing bridge improvement project. Beginning on Monday, April 20th at 7 p.m., I-57 will be closed in both directions between exit 65 (West Frankfort) and exit 59 (Johnston City). The closure is necessary to safely install structural beams for the bridge carrying Stiritz Road over I-57, located just north of Johnston City. A marked detour will be in place to guide motorists around the closure, with northbound and southbound traffic directed to Illinois 37 between the two exits.
Why it matters
This closure is part of IDOT's ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the state's critical infrastructure. The I-57 corridor is a major thoroughfare for both passenger and commercial traffic, so any disruptions can have significant impacts on regional mobility and commerce.
The details
The original closure was scheduled for Monday, April 13th, but has been postponed by one week due to expected inclement weather. All lanes are now expected to reopen by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21st. Flaggers, message boards, and other traffic control devices will be used to guide motorists through the detour route.
- The closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026.
- All lanes are expected to reopen by 7 a.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
