Nike is releasing a low-top version of the iconic 'Banned' Air Jordan 1 sneaker, which features a cheeky 'X' on the heel and references the legend of the NBA banning Michael Jordan from wearing the original black and red colorway in 1984.

Why it matters

The 'Banned' Air Jordan 1 is one of the most legendary sneakers in the history of the brand, and this new low-top iteration will allow more consumers to get their hands on a piece of that iconic story and style.

The details

The Air Jordan 1 Low 'Banned' will feature the same 'Bred' (black and red) colorway as the original high-top, with an 'X' printed on the heel as a nod to the NBA's supposed ban. The insoles will also include the famous line from the first Air Jordan commercial: 'On September 25th, Nike created a revolutionary basketball shoe. On October 18th, 1984, they were thrown out of the game.' The inner-tongue tags will feature the text 'Imagine if...?' as a callback to last year's Air Jordan 1 40th anniversary campaign.

  • The Air Jordan 1 Low 'Banned' will release on May 16, 2026.
  • The original 'Banned' Air Jordan 1 high-top was released exclusively through outlet stores in 2011.
