Iowa has added the commitment of Illinois State transfer guard Ty'Reek Coleman to their roster. The 6-foot-2 guard from Aurora, Illinois averaged 10 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game as a freshman, shooting over 50% from the field and 41.6% from three-point range. Coleman chose Iowa after visiting several other programs and will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Hawkeyes.

Why it matters

With the departure of Iowa's leading scorer and first-team All-Big Ten point guard Bennett Stirtz, the Hawkeyes were in need of adding a talented lead guard to their backcourt. Coleman's scoring ability, shooting efficiency, and playmaking skills make him an ideal replacement to run the offense alongside returning guards Tate Sage and Isaia Howard.

The details

A three-star recruit out of Waubonsie Valley High School, Coleman was named IBCA First Team All-State, DuPage Valley Conference Player of the Year, and Chicago Tribune Region Player of the Year as a senior after averaging 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.3 steals per game. He chose Illinois State over offers from programs like Drake, Northern Iowa, Murray State, and Colorado State. As a freshman, Coleman started 19 of the Redbirds' 35 games, with season highs of 24 points and 33 minutes played.

  • Coleman will join the Hawkeyes for the 2026-27 season.
  • He has three years of eligibility remaining after his freshman campaign at Illinois State.
