The Mackay Miners girls basketball team is headed to the 1A state tournament healthy and confident after winning the 1A District 5-6 tournament. Coach Josh Pehrson said this is the first time in several years his team has been fully healthy going into the state tournament, and he believes they have a chance to win the whole thing.
Why it matters
The Miners have made it to the state tournament the past two seasons but have gone 0-4. With an experienced lineup returning and a key player coming back from injury, this could be Mackay's best chance yet to win a state title and bring home the school's first girls basketball championship.
The details
Mackay (19-2) pulled away from Leadore (15-4) with a 20-2 run that spanned the second and third quarters. Leadore eventually pulled within 38-31 in the fourth quarter but couldn't overcome the deficit. Alyssa Pehrson led the Miners with 15 points and three 3-pointers, while Danika Seefried added 11 points. Mackay's only two losses this season have been to 2A state challenger Butte County.
- Mackay won the 1A District 5-6 tournament on February 13, 2026 to earn their spot in the 1A state tournament.
- Leadore will play Rockland on Saturday, February 15, 2026 with the winner earning the district's second berth to the state tournament.
