Iowa's struggles on the mound against Minnesota expose cracks in their Big Ten title hopes.Iowa City TodayThe University of Iowa baseball team dropped the series opener to Minnesota, 9-4, on Friday afternoon at Duane Banks Field. Iowa head coach Rick Heller was critical of his team's pitching performance, saying 'If you pitch that poorly, especially on a Friday night, you really have no chance at winning.' Minnesota struck first with three runs in the opening innings, and the Gophers extended their lead throughout the game.
Why it matters

What they’re saying
“'If you pitch that poorly, especially on a Friday night, you really have no chance at winning. You just don't, and if it continues, we are not going to put ourselves in a place to win. It is tough to think you are going to score eight or nine runs every Friday night. Somebody has to step up and give us something, some level of consistent start, but tonight it was pretty much tons of free bases. Didn't make them work for it.'”
— Rick Heller, Head Coach
