The Museum of Natural History at the University of Iowa is bringing back its popular Art & Write Night program, which invites guests to work on creative projects in the museum's galleries after-hours. The monthly event welcomes professional, aspiring, and amateur artists to use the museum's exhibits as inspiration for sketching, writing, and other creative pursuits. Participants can join anytime between 6-8 p.m. and have the option to share their work at the end of each session.

Why it matters

The Art & Write Night program provides a unique opportunity for the local community to engage with the museum in a hands-on, creative way. By opening up the galleries after-hours, the museum is fostering a sense of exploration and artistic expression, allowing visitors to connect with the space and its natural history exhibits in a more personal and immersive manner.

The details

The program takes place on the first Friday of each month, with participants gathering in Bird Hall on the third floor of Macbride Hall. While the main entrance to Iowa Hall will be closed and locked during the event, all other building doors will be open, providing access to the ground floor of Macbride Hall, restrooms, stairs, and the elevator to the third-floor galleries. The museum will provide a new creative prompt for each session, and participants are welcome to work on their own projects or take part in themed challenges. The last 15-30 minutes of each event will be reserved for sharing and connecting with other artists.
