The West Burlington City Council has approved the first reading of an ordinance that would regulate the keeping of chickens within city limits. The measure passed on a narrow 3-to-2 vote and would only allow chickens on agriculturally zoned land, properties of at least two acres under one owner, or land already used for legal agricultural purposes.

Why it matters

This proposed ordinance highlights the ongoing debate in many communities over the balance between urban agriculture and residential zoning. While supporters say it provides clearer oversight, opponents argue it effectively bans chickens in West Burlington by setting restrictive property requirements.
