On Sunday, the Stanford baseball team defeated the Miami Hurricanes by a final score of 14-6 at home. The Cardinal offense came alive, led by strong performances from Brock Sell, Teddy Tokheim, and Rintaro Sasaki, who each had multiple RBIs. Stanford's pitching staff was also able to lock down the Hurricanes lineup after Miami jumped out to an early lead.

Why it matters

This was an important bounce-back win for Stanford after dropping the first two games of the series against the highly ranked Hurricanes. The Cardinal were able to avoid the sweep and end the week on a high note, building momentum heading into their next game against local rival Santa Clara.

The details

Stanford fell behind 4-2 early, but responded with a four-run 3rd inning to take a 6-4 lead. Miami tied it at 6-6 in the 4th, but the Cardinal pulled away with two more runs in the 4th and then added insurance runs in the 5th, 7th, and 8th innings. Brock Sell hit a solo home run, while Teddy Tokheim and Luke Lavin also drove in multiple runs for Stanford.

What they’re saying

“Well, you know, obviously the best we played the last three days. And I'll be honest, that's the best we've played the last three days, too. We beat them at their best game.”

— David Esquer, Stanford Head Coach

“You know, he threw that slider, the first pitch, and I took it and threw it again and I got to roll it over to the first base side and I saw it very well. And I knew if I saw it again, I was going to take a good swing at it and it happened.”

— Brock Sell, Stanford Outfielder

What’s next

Stanford will look to carry the momentum from this win into their next game against local rival Santa Clara on Monday, April 20th at 6:05 PM PT. The Broncos defeated the Cardinal 2-1 last week, so Stanford will be seeking revenge.

The takeaway

This was a much-needed win for Stanford as they try to build towards the postseason. The Cardinal offense finally broke through against a tough Miami pitching staff, and their own pitching staff was able to settle in and shut down the Hurricanes lineup. If Stanford can continue to get this kind of balanced production, they could make a late-season push in the ACC.
