The Phoenix Suns have signed forward Haywood Highsmith during the NBA All-Star break, adding a defensive-minded player to their roster as they make a push for the playoffs. Highsmith, who was waived by the Brooklyn Nets earlier this month, is expected to provide energy and toughness on the defensive end to complement the Suns' offensive firepower.
Why it matters
The Suns, currently 32-23, have transformed themselves from a preseason basement dweller to an expected postseason participant. Highsmith's addition should help shore up their defense as they aim to make a deep playoff run.
The details
Highsmith, 26, has not played all season due to a meniscus injury that required surgery over the summer. He was initially traded from the Miami Heat to the Brooklyn Nets but was waived on February 5th. The Suns likely wouldn't have signed Highsmith if they didn't expect him to be healthy and ready to contribute this season. Last year with the Heat, Highsmith averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
- Highsmith was waived by the Brooklyn Nets on February 5, 2026.
- The Suns signed Highsmith during the 2026 NBA All-Star break.
The players
Haywood Highsmith
A 26-year-old forward who was previously with the Miami Heat and Brooklyn Nets. Highsmith is known for his defensive intensity and energy.
Jordan Goodwin
A Suns guard who is also known for his defensive capabilities, and has been compared to Highsmith in that regard.
Jordan Ott
The first-year head coach of the Phoenix Suns.
What they’re saying
“If you've enjoyed the season Jordan Goodwin has had, you're going to have a blast having Haywood Highsmith around. A Blue-Collar Boy™️ on arrival! Plenty defensive fun to be had with "The Locksmith" 🔐”
— Stephen PridGeon-Garner, PHNX writer (PHNX)
What’s next
The judge in the case will decide on Tuesday whether or not to allow Walker Reed Quinn out on bail.
The takeaway
This signing highlights the Suns' focus on shoring up their defense as they make a push for the playoffs. Highsmith's reputation as a gritty, high-energy defender should complement the team's offensive firepower and help them make a deep postseason run.
