The AAUW Flagler County Branch has chosen five seventh-grade girls from local middle schools to attend a week-long science and technology camp in June 2026, with nearly all costs covered by the organization. The selected students will attend the AAUW Tech Trek camp at Stetson University in DeLand and Florida Atlantic University in Jupiter, focusing on STEM education and encouraging middle school girls to explore those fields.

Why it matters

The AAUW Tech Trek camp aims to spark interest in STEM subjects among middle school girls, a critical age when research shows girls' participation in those fields often begins to decline. By providing a fully funded opportunity, the AAUW Flagler County Branch is helping to address the gender gap in STEM education and open doors for the next generation of female scientists and technologists.

The details

The five students chosen represent two local middle schools - Michelle Ervin and Kendall Miller from Indian Trails Middle School and Karolina Grinde, Isabella Weasley, and Leila Worley from Buddy Taylor Middle School. The week-long residential program allows campers to live on a college campus and take part in hands-on problem-solving workshops led by women working in STEM fields.

  • The AAUW Flagler County Branch announced the selections on April 10, 2026.
  • The AAUW Tech Trek camp will be held in June 2026.
