The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4031 in Durango, Colorado hosted an Easter Sunday community breakfast that served an estimated 300 meals to support local veterans. The event was organized by the Veterans Relief Committee, which uses proceeds from sponsored community meals to help pay for veterans' rent, furniture, utility bills, and car payments.

Why it matters

The VFW's community meals are an important way to connect veterans with non-veterans and provide vital financial assistance to those struggling to make ends meet. The events help address the isolation and readjustment challenges many veterans face when returning from service.

What they’re saying

“The big part of it that does (it) for us is to get the community to connect with our veterans. They get disconnected. They've done their service and come back and deal with traumatic things and whatnot, and readjusting to the community more or less.”

— Jim Schoultz, Volunteer, Veterans Relief Committee

“That money is all donated to the Veterans Relief Committee that helps us take care of our veterans, whether they need a ramp built to get into their home or a ride to VA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) hospital down in Albuquerque; utility bills; food; whatever we can do to help them out.”

— Jim Schoultz, Volunteer, Veterans Relief Committee

What’s next

The Veterans Relief Committee plans to host another community breakfast or luncheon sponsored by the Rotary Club of Durango in the coming months.

The takeaway

The VFW's community meals are a heartwarming example of how a local organization can bring together veterans and non-veterans to provide vital financial and social support to those who have served our country. These events help address isolation, readjustment challenges, and other needs faced by many veterans in the Durango area.
