The Vallejo makerspace at John F. Kennedy Library is hosting a free DIY cat tree workshop over the course of three days next week. The event is April 21-23, from 5 to 7 p.m. each night, and is open to children over 10 accompanied by an adult. Participants will be able to build their own cat structures using materials provided by the library.

Why it matters

The cat tree workshop is part of the library's efforts to expand its programming beyond just books and provide hands-on learning opportunities for the community. The event aims to foster creativity, curiosity, and DIY skills among participants.

The details

Librarian Madison Evans came up with the idea for the cat tree workshop after building one for her own cat. The library acquired donated carpet squares and other materials to make the workshop possible. Participants are welcome to bring their own tools, but staff will be on hand to demonstrate how to safely use power tools for those who are inexperienced. The workshop will be reservation-only to provide a more focused experience for attendees.

What they’re saying

“When I initially started making the flyer, I didn't have any idea in particular, but a cat tree seemed a little simpler than what I did. Cat trees seemed a little more straightforward to show people.”

— Madison Evans, Librarian

“It's all about pushing curiosity and creativity. We want to see them tinkering and trying. Sometimes things are going to break, and that's OK. What matters is that this is a place of learning.”

— Madison Evans, Librarian

What’s next

The library is encouraging participants to register in advance for the DIY Cat Tree workshop, as spots are limited. More information on the event and other upcoming programs can be found on the library's website.

The takeaway

The Vallejo makerspace is expanding its offerings beyond traditional library services, providing hands-on learning opportunities that foster creativity and DIY skills within the community. This cat tree workshop is an example of the library's efforts to be a hub for free, accessible activities that bring people together.
