Construction is underway on a major mixed-use development in downtown Santa Cruz that will include a new public library branch, 124 affordable housing units, a childcare center, and a 240-space parking garage. The project is expected to be completed in spring 2028 following a two-phase construction timeline, with the first phase focusing on the building's shell, housing, childcare, and parking set to finish later this year.

Why it matters

This project represents a significant investment in the downtown Santa Cruz community, providing much-needed affordable housing, childcare services, and public library access in a central location. It also aims to address parking challenges that have long plagued the area around the current library branch.

The details

Workers were observed on Thursday pouring concrete and installing rebar cages as part of the initial site work for the future library branch. The full development will include the library along with the other community amenities across a multi-year construction timeline.

  • Construction on the first phase is expected to wrap up by the end of 2026.
  • The full project, including the library, affordable housing, childcare center, and parking garage, is slated for completion in spring 2028.
