The new documentary film 'Tight & Nerdy' is not about Weird Al Yankovic or burlesque, but a remarkable hybrid of both. The film follows the Al-Stravaganza burlesque troupe, which performs routines set to the music of Weird Al Yankovic. The troupe, made up of performers like Pickles Kintaro, Mistress Marla Spankx, Pearl E. Gates and Odessa Lil, met over a decade ago in San Francisco and have since tantalized audiences with their DIY showgirl costumes, bawdy choreography, and Weird Al-inspired numbers.
Why it matters
The film explores how the Al-Stravaganza troupe has created a counter-world where everyone is in on the kink-meets-camp Weird Al-ness of the whole thing. It also delves into the personal stories of the performers, revealing how burlesque has served as a creative outlet and a way for them to own their weirdness and find a sense of belonging.
The details
Tight & Nerdy filmmakers Jeff Nucera and Jonathan Ruane capture the backstage thrill and about-to-go-on stress of the troupe's act, as well as the performers' day-to-day life confessionals. The film features insights from Weird Al Yankovic himself, who discusses how the "Weird" in his name came to him as a badge of honor that he embraced and built a career around.
- The documentary 'Tight & Nerdy' will have its West Coast premiere at the 28th San Francisco IndieFest on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 8:30pm.
