Verizon, SoftBank, South Korea's SK Broadband, and Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom have filed an application with the FCC to build the East Asia to North America Cable System (E2A), a new submarine fiber-optic cable network that would connect Morro Bay, California to locations in East Asia.
Why it matters
The E2A cable project represents a major infrastructure investment to improve high-speed internet and data connectivity between the U.S. West Coast and key markets in East Asia. This could boost economic and cultural exchange, as well as support the growing demand for cloud services, video streaming, and other data-intensive applications across the Pacific.
The details
The E2A cable system would be a joint venture between the four telecom companies, who are seeking regulatory approval to build and operate the transpacific network. If approved, the subsea cable would provide a new high-capacity data pipeline between the U.S. and East Asia, complementing existing undersea cable systems.
- Verizon, SoftBank, SK Broadband, and Chunghwa Telecom filed the FCC application last week.
The players
Verizon
A major American telecommunications company and one of the largest wireless network operators in the United States.
SoftBank
A Japanese multinational conglomerate holding company and one of the largest technology investors in the world.
SK Broadband
A South Korean internet service provider and subsidiary of SK Telecom, one of the largest telecom companies in South Korea.
Chunghwa Telecom
The largest telecommunications company in Taiwan and a leading provider of fixed-line, mobile, and internet services.
What’s next
If the FCC approves the application, the companies will move forward with the construction and deployment of the E2A subsea cable system.
The takeaway
This new transpacific cable project represents a significant investment in digital infrastructure that could enhance connectivity and data flows between the U.S. and key markets in East Asia, supporting the growing demand for high-bandwidth applications and services.
