As Lucid battles to gain traction for its Gravity SUV, Cadillac's 3-row electric models continue to attract more buyers in the luxury EV market.Los Angeles TodayAccording to data from Cox Automotive, Lucid sold 1,631 units of the Gravity SUV in the U.S. in the first quarter, while Cadillac sold 3,334 units of its own electric 3-row SUVs, the Vistiq and Escalade EV. Meanwhile, Lucid's rival Rivian Automotive sold 5,494 units of its R1S three-row SUV.
Why it matters
The sales figures highlight the challenges Lucid faces in the competitive 3-row electric SUV market, where established automakers like Cadillac are gaining traction with their own offerings. Lucid is counting on the Gravity to anchor its partnership with Uber for a robotaxi service, but the vehicle's underwhelming consumer demand could complicate those plans.
The details
Lucid pinned its disappointing Q1 deliveries to a disruption on Gravity deliveries caused by a supplier quality issue with regard to second-row seats. The Gravity has a starting price of $79,900, positioning it as a higher-end EV option. Lucid is also working on a midsize platform vehicle called Cosmos, which is slated to enter production before the end of 2026.
- In the first quarter, Lucid delivered 3,093 vehicles in total, lower than the 3,109 units delivered in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
- Lucid started initial deliveries of its three-row Gravity SUV in December 2024.
The players
Lucid Motors
An American electric vehicle manufacturer that has been struggling to match the sales of its 3-row electric SUV, the Gravity, against established competitors like Cadillac.
Cadillac
The luxury vehicle division of American automaker General Motors (GM), which has found success with its electric 3-row SUVs, the Vistiq and Escalade EV.
Rivian Automotive
An American electric vehicle startup that sold 5,494 units of its R1S three-row SUV in the first quarter, outpacing Lucid's Gravity.
Uber Technologies
The ride-hailing giant that has a partnership with Lucid to deploy the Gravity as a robotaxi on its platform.
Silvio Napoli
The newly appointed CEO of Lucid Motors, who will be tasked with turning the company around.
What they’re saying
“Lucid CFO Taoufiq Boussaid said in December that the consumer base for the Gravity includes former Lucid owners who want to move to a bigger car and also people who used to own SUVs in the past and wanted an upgrade.”
— Taoufiq Boussaid, CFO, Lucid Motors
What’s next
Lucid's new CEO, Silvio Napoli, will be tasked with addressing the company's challenges and turning around the Gravity's sales performance to support its partnership with Uber.
The takeaway
Lucid's struggles to match the sales of Cadillac's 3-row electric SUVs highlight the competitive landscape in the EV market, where established automakers are gaining ground. Lucid's reliance on the Gravity to anchor its robotaxi partnership with Uber could be complicated by the vehicle's underwhelming consumer demand.
