The city's Bureau of Engineering has selected global engineering firm Tetra Tech to fortify and relight the Sixth Street Viaduct in Los Angeles following a series of copper wire thefts that left the iconic bridge darkened. The project includes restoring wiring to lighting along the roadway, barriers, ramps, stairways and arches, as well as hardening pull boxes, service cabinets and conduits to deter future theft and installing security cameras.
Why it matters
The Sixth Street Bridge plays a vital role in connecting Angelenos between the Eastside and the heart of the city. Restoring the lighting and security on the bridge will help make the area feel safer and more connected for local residents. The project is also being accelerated ahead of the 2028 Olympics, when the bridge and surrounding area will see increased foot traffic.
The details
Tetra Tech began design work in January under the Bureau of Engineering's direction to address the lighting issues on the Sixth Street Viaduct. The project will restore wiring to lighting along the roadway, barriers, ramps, stairways and arches, as well as harden pull boxes, service cabinets and conduits to deter future theft. Security cameras will also be installed as part of the effort.
