The IWC Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive, the first watch engineered from scratch for the rigors of human spaceflight, glows with advanced cybernetic hardware.Long Beach TodayIWC has unveiled the Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive, the first wristwatch designed specifically for human spaceflight. Developed in partnership with space company Vast, the watch features a patent-pending rotating bezel system to control all functions, eliminating the need for a traditional crown that would be difficult to use with astronauts' thick gloves. The watch is engineered to withstand the extreme conditions of space travel, including rocket ascent forces, temperature extremes, vacuum, and radiation.
Why it matters
As private space travel and commercial space stations become more of a reality, there is a growing need for specialized equipment designed for the unique challenges of the space environment. The Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive represents a significant advancement in watch engineering, providing astronauts with a tool specifically tailored to their needs during spaceflight.
The details
The Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive features a matte black dial with a dedicated 24-hour hand to help astronauts keep track of Greenwich Mean Time, the neutral time zone used by mission control centers. The watch is housed in a white zirconium oxide ceramic case with a Ceratanium bezel and case back, a proprietary IWC alloy that combines the lightness of titanium with the scratch resistance of ceramic. The watch has been tested to withstand 10g vibration forces and the extreme temperature and radiation conditions of spaceflight, earning it official spaceflight certification for use on Vast's upcoming Haven-1 commercial space station.
- IWC signed on as the official timekeeper for Vast's Haven-1 space station last year.
- The Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive was developed in partnership with Vast over the past year.
The players
IWC
A Swiss luxury watch manufacturer with a 90-year heritage in aviation watches.
Vast
A five-year-old company building Haven-1, the proposed successor to the International Space Station and the world's first commercial space station.
Kelton Temby
The senior mission manager at Vast who supervised the testing and certification of the Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive for spaceflight.
What’s next
The Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive will be one of the first watches to be worn by astronauts aboard Vast's Haven-1 commercial space station when it launches.
The takeaway
The development of the Pilot's Venturer Vertical Drive represents a significant milestone in the evolution of specialized equipment for human spaceflight, showcasing the innovative engineering required to create tools that can withstand the unique challenges of the space environment.
