Boston Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer hit a two-run home run at Fenway Park on Friday, but it was nearly robbed by San Diego Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. Mayer, who grew up idolizing Tatis, said he would have changed his mind about his favorite player if Tatis had made the catch.
Why it matters
The near-robbery by Tatis, one of baseball's most exciting young stars, added extra drama to Mayer's first career home run and highlighted the connection between the two players from the same region of California.
The details
With the Red Sox facing a left-handed reliever, they kept the left-handed hitting Mayer in the game. He rewarded their trust by crushing a deep fly ball to right field that was heading towards the short Fenway Park bullpen fence. Tatis raced back and leaped at the wall in an attempt to rob Mayer of the home run, but the ball cleared the fence for a two-run shot.
