Why it matters
The Sinatras' 1967 hit was groundbreaking as the first father-daughter chart-topping duet, while the later Kidman-Williams version demonstrated the enduring appeal of the song across generations.
The details
Frank Sinatra immediately recognized the potential in "Somethin' Stupid" when he heard the original version by Carson Parks and his wife Gaile Foote. He brought the song to his daughter Nancy's longtime producer, Lee Hazlewood, who produced the Sinatra duet. Rather than a traditional duet structure, Frank and Nancy sang the entire song together, which led some listeners to dub it the "Incest Song." Guitarist Al Casey, who had played on the original version, was brought in to recreate the guitar line that Frank Sinatra wanted.
