Under the deal, the Yurok Fire Department will oversee Blue Lake Rancheria's fire management, provide expertise and assistance for cultural burning initiatives, and establish a new battalion chief position stationed at the Blue Lake facility.

The memorandum of understanding signed by the Yurok Tribal Chairman Joseph L. James and Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Chairman Jason Ramos will have the Yurok Fire Department provide oversight and operational management of Blue Lake Rancheria's fire personnel and equipment. The Yurok Fire Department will also utilize the Blue Lake Rancheria's fire department as a satellite facility and provide administrative assistance as needed. Additionally, the Yurok Tribe will help with cultural fire practices, including providing training from Yurok Prescribed Fire Burn Bosses and other fire practitioners.
