Tait Reynolds' dynamic athleticism and competitive spirit could make him Clemson's next breakout quarterback.Queen Creek TodayClemson freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds is competing to be the team's starting QB in 2026. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound three-star signee from Queen Creek, Arizona, beat out several other players in the spring to be the Tigers' No. 2 quarterback behind redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina. Reynolds, who has also expressed interest in playing baseball, is now aiming to overtake Vizzina as the starter before Clemson's season opener against LSU on Sept. 5.
Why it matters
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has never started a true freshman quarterback to begin a season, but Reynolds has a shot to be the first. If he doesn't win the job for Week 1, Swinney has also inserted several true freshmen during the season in his Clemson tenure, including Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence and Cade Klubnik.
The details
Reynolds, the second-youngest of six siblings, grew up playing sports with his older brothers Trey and Porter. He was always determined to stand out and prove he was as good as them. After a standout sophomore season in high school, Reynolds reopened his baseball commitment to Arizona State to explore his football options. With the help of a new offensive coordinator, Reynolds had a breakout junior year, completing 61.9% of his passes for 2,238 yards and 22 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,426 yards and 19 scores. However, he suffered a hamstring injury before his senior season that limited him to just two games.
- Reynolds enrolled at Clemson in January 2026.
- He beat out several players in the spring to be the Tigers' No. 2 QB.
- Clemson's season opener against LSU is scheduled for September 5, 2026.

What they’re saying
“He is the ultimate competitor on the football field. He will not be outworked, and he has the desire to be the best in everything he does.”
— Travis Schureman, Former high school football coach
“We came out of the spring, (Vizzina) one, and (Reynolds) two. It's not close. Those two guys separated, and that's just where we are.”
— Dabo Swinney, Clemson head coach
What’s next
Tait Reynolds will continue to compete with Christopher Vizzina for the starting quarterback job during Clemson's preseason practice. The winner will be named the starter before the Tigers' season opener against LSU on September 5, 2026.
The takeaway
Tait Reynolds has the talent and competitive drive to potentially become Clemson's first true freshman starting quarterback under Dabo Swinney. While he faces an uphill battle against the more experienced Vizzina, Reynolds' athleticism and rapid development could earn him the job and help the Tigers return to national championship contention.
