David was born on July 02, 1947, in Brooklyn Borough, New York City, U.S., to Mortimer Julius David, a clothing manufacturer, and his wife, Rose. He has an older brother, Ken. His father’s family had relocated to the U.S. from Germany in the 19th century, while his mother’s family was originally from Ukraine. His great-grandfather lived in Mobile, Alabama, and had fought for the Confederacy at the time of the Civil War. David attended Sheepshead Bay High School and graduated in 1965. Afterward, he enrolled at the University of Maryland and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History in 1970.

It was at the university that he discovered that he had a talent and unique perspective for interpreting situations and could make people laugh. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and sought regular employment while pursuing stand-up comedy after returning. He became a writer and a cast member of A.B.C.’s “Fridays” in 1980 and worked alongside Michael Richards. In 1984, he worked for N.B.C.’s “Saturday Night Live” as a writer. In 1987, he wrote and performed for “Way Off Broadway,” a talk show hosted by Joy Behar.

He teamed up with Seinfield to create “Seinfield,” the T.V. sitcom that reached the heights of success. In 1993, working on “Seinfield” earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards, one for Outstanding Comedy Series and the other for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in a Comedy Series. His prominence culminated after creating and starring as a semi-fictionalized version of himself in the H.B.O. series, “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” He wrote or co-wrote every episode since its initial pilot episode in 1999. He won 27 Primetime Emmy Awards and earned three Golden Globe Award nominations.
