Carbon County officials have awarded a $311,499 contract to Savery Creek Enterprises to repair damage to County Road 603 south of Baggs, Wyoming. The road has been closed since October due to underground water and heavy rainfall causing a section of the roadway to slide down an adjacent hillside. The repairs must be completed by the end of March to allow the Wyoming Department of Transportation to access a nearby bridge replacement project.
Why it matters
The closure of CR603 has prevented WYDOT from accessing a bridge replacement project over the Little Snake River, which could be canceled if the road is not repaired in time. The county also faces the risk of having to repay WYDOT for $600,000 in engineering costs if the bridge project is canceled.
The details
County Road and Bridge Superintendent Kandis Fritz reported that the Wyoming Department of Transportation is using federal Bridge Investment Program funds to replace a bridge over the Little Snake River at no cost to the county. However, if CR603 isn't repaired by spring, the state's contractor will be unable to reach the bridge site, and the project will be canceled. If that happens, the county would be required to repay WYDOT for encumbered engineering costs totaling roughly $600,000.
- In October, County Road 603 was closed to all traffic after underground water and heavy rainfall caused a section of the roadway to slide down the adjacent hillside.
- The Board of Carbon County Commissioners approved a $65,000 contract with Engineering Associates to design water mitigation efforts for County Road 603 in February 2026.
- The contract with Savery Creek Enterprises states that repair work must be completed by the end of March 2026, weather permitting.
