The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service has issued a warning for strong winds that could gust over 75 miles per hour in parts of southeast Wyoming until 6 p.m. on Monday. Winds of 74 mph or higher are considered "hurricane force" and the agency has also posted a Fire Danger Watch due to the windy and dry conditions.
Why it matters
High winds can create dangerous driving conditions, especially for high-profile vehicles, and also increase the risk of wildfires spreading rapidly in areas without snowpack. The strong winds will also contribute to unseasonably warm temperatures across the region, which could set daily records on Monday.
The details
According to the National Weather Service, the areas of primary concern for the high winds are along and east of Interstate 25. The gusty conditions are expected to impact the usual prone areas of I-25 and I-80 in Wyoming, as well as potentially spreading into Converse and eastern Platte Counties. The combination of the strong winds, warm temperatures, and very dry air could result in critical fire weather conditions on Monday.
- The high winds are forecast to continue through 6 p.m. on Monday, March 11, 2026.
- A Fire Danger Watch has also been posted for the affected areas.
